Of all the parts for hot rods in the ’40s- ’50s and ’60s– the Stromberg is King. Almost every Hotrod of this era had a pair, trips or up to six or eight with chrome scoops or bonnets. I will give you a brief history of the three models most popular for use on Hot Rods.

    Stromberg model “97”
The model “97” had a 31/32 ” or 97/100s” venturi and was standard equipment on the 1936, 1937 and a few early ’38 ford pass. cars and trucks with the v-8 flatrhead engine. This carb. was made for many years as a replacement unit after it became obsolete on ford cars and trucks. The Stromberg” 97″ is the most famous of all hot rod carbs. Some are marked with a large raised” 97″ inside a circle on the side of the bowl –some have a small raised”97″ –others have a small stamped 97 –and still others have no markings at all. Look for the 31/32″ venturi size marked on the side of the bowl on some, but not all “97s”. Stromberg 97 bases are usually marked EE-1 and are the same as the model 48. The good cores that havn’t been chromed–broken–polished–sanded—modified– stored outside—-froze—cut–ground on–and beat on with large hard objects —————are getting hard to find and costly with the popularity of nostalia hot rods today.

    Stromberg model “81”
The model 81 had a small 13/16″or 81/100s” venturi and was standard equipment on the 1937 and 1938 fords with the small V-8–60 engine. This carb was very popular with the midget racers using the v-8 -60 in years past and even today. It was not produced in large amounts and good cores are rare today. This little carb. flowed about 125 cfm and make great hot rod carbs for small inch motors. Souped up Model A and B Ford and the little v-8 60 V-8 use these alot. The body section and the base are much smaller inside on the 81 but the outside dimensions looks the same. Most are marked with a large 81 on the side of the bowl, but all have the 13/16 venturi size stamped on the side of the bowl. The 81 uses a smaller base with tiny throttle plates marked EE-7/8.

  8. Tuossa oli virranjakajan alipaineesta:

Distributor vacuum…The 97 provides no ported vacuum for a distributor advance. We recommend an all-mechanical distributor because we have had customers connect the distributor to the manifold and it doesn’t like it. It won’t idle and throws out black smoke because the distributor is fully advanced at idle. We have seen vacuum taken from the rear plug on the 97 base, but Norm Schenck, our consultant at Competition Fuel Systems in AZ says, “we need the vacuum advance only at light load/part throttle conditions (cruising), and none at idle or full throttle. Only a port on the front of the throttle bore at the same height as the transition fuel port accomplishes this”. We are working on a new base to achieve this, right now.

Voisi kai tuo idea toimia..

  11. Slant Sickness

    Slant Sickness Double Gearhead

    1. On a smaller size engine #43 and 69 PV work good.

    2. On a banger, jet them both with .042 mains and # 71 powervalves, fuggedabout progressive linkage and run them tandem; join the two left throttleshafts and pull off the right rear ball.

    Fuel Pressure Regulating
Fuel pressure is very critical to these early carburetors. Early Ford Motor Company shop bulletins and manuals state that the Ford/Holley/Chandler Grove and Stromberg carburetors are all designed to operate at 2 1/2 psi. Yet the fuel pump deliver pressure specification is 3 1/2 psi! I don't understand the thinking behind this.
The Strombergs are very sensitive to fuel pressure because of the float/needle valve design. It just doesn't exert enough pressure to overcome the fuel pressure. They have a tendency to flood when fuel pressure is in the neighborhood of 3 1/2 lbs.
On these carburetors I install a pressure regulator and set it at 2 1/2 psi. This regulator must be physically located between the fuel pump and carburetor since the fuel pump is putting out 3 1/2 psi. If you're entering a classic car for judging, then carry a spare fuel line without the regulator and replace when you get to the meet.

  15. Se on varmaan hyvä lähtökohta. Laitetaas tännekin kommentti, mistä tämä spin off topic (mikä sana..:)) sai alkunsa:

Next up jetting. These are only guidelines. Temperature, altitude, cams, and compression all have a factor on jetting

    3x2:

    rochesters 1x2 or 2x1 pri 059 sec 057
    94’s [15/16 bore size] pri 053 sec 057
    97’s pri 046 sec 045

    4x2:
    weiand staggered
    94’s [15/16 bore] pri 052 sec 056
    97’s pri 045 sec 045

    6x2:
    edelbrock X-1 cross ram
    97’s pri 045 sec 044

    Saman tyyliset säädöt on tässäkin:

The last 6x2 rig I did went as follows: Two center carbs with .045 mains and # 65 powervalves; four end carbs, using progressive linkage, .043 mains with # 69 powervalves. You want to go skinnier on the end powervalves to prevent bogging when the 4 slaves come to the party. The old thinking was to remove the chokeplates for more flow. Not true. They're there for a reason, to provide a smooth airstream over the open ends of the discharge jets for proper atomization. Stromberg's love unrestricted air gathered from a still source.

Migueloksen postaus onkin tosi hyvä! Kiitos.
